deenseZai, I meant to write this for Christmas Day. In fact, I started it, but it got put aside in Yuletide madness.
Merry Christmas. Sorry it's late
Dreams of white weddings weren’t for her. Maybe it was losing her momma when she did; maybe it was knowing that she was going to die and deciding to travel and live her life instead of hanging around Texas waiting.
It could’ve been the people who had left her here. Hiro, Donald, all of those friends just going. Charlie knew that there wasn’t any way to tie people to you that the island couldn’t pull apart if it chose to.
When Ianto showed her the ring it was all she could do not to cry. Not for the reasons that someone might think but because the only thing she could think to say was no. In the end, she took the ring, wearing it on her right hand. She loved him too much not to accept it somehow, and he told her he understood.
She prayed, some nights, that he really did.
It was very day that she got the news from Ellie Bartowski that Hiro showed up again. Right on the path in front of her, right from that horrible moment after she died. He clung to her and Charlie imagined that she felt the life inside her flutter as she told him it would all be alright. As she tried to explain the island to him. Too early by far, but she would swear to Delilah all those years later that it was the first time she felt her move.
It was the same day she moved that ring to her left hand. That she told Ianto yes. Because weddings didn’t need to be big or fancy, and it wasn’t just her she was doing it for. It was for him, to help stop that look he had when he saw her in the kitchen with Hiro trying to explain. That slightly haunted look that vanished as soon as he got his mask up.
Charlie always did hate that mask.
